Indonesia’s Online Gambling Market

Online gambling in Indonesia is booming. Despite having only a fraction of the population of neighboring India, permainan judi slot online Indonesia’s online gambling market may grow by as much as 100 percent by the end of 2016. According to a recent report from global research firm Eilers Research, online gambling in the Southeast Asian nation is projected to reach $1.5 billion by then.

An international law firm has added to the regulatory confusion by applying to license a remote gambling site in Indonesia.

Just before the October deadline to file a license application, Jim Stern, a lawyer from the Chicago firm of Winston & Strawn, filed an application for a gambling license with the Indonesian Ministry of Finance, State Enterprise Perusahaan Listrik Negara.

Perusahaan Listrik Negara is the state-owned electricity provider. Stern says his law firm was looking for an Indonesian company that could run the site.

“We were looking to see if there was an existing operator,” Stern said.

Stern said his firm didn’t actually expect to get the license, but it was a chance to make a good impression. Stern doesn’t have any experience in the online gambling industry, but his firm specializes in international licensing for the global sports betting industry.

“I had a meeting with them to discuss the issues that we had to deal with, and they weren’t entirely clear about some things, so we thought it would be useful to have our expertise to be able to make sure that they could get this right,” he said.

Stern said the application was filed under the category of remote gambling sites, not physical casinos. The application was not approved because the Indonesian government didn’t have any online gambling sites in operation.

“We weren’t anticipating a license, but we thought it would be worthwhile to do the application,” Stern said.

Stern says the site in question will be a sportsbook, permainan judi slot online which will be linked to a number of Indonesian websites.

“We’re looking at setting up an Indonesian sports betting exchange. We’re trying to get it right, so that we can really try to give the Indonesian market a place to go and be able to bet on their favorite teams and sports,” he said.

Stern said the site is not intended to directly compete with existing offshore betting operators in Indonesia, but he’s willing to work with the existing offshore operators.

“I think there’s a lot of room for a lot of different operators to work together, and I think it would be good for the industry in Indonesia,” he said.
